We meet in a run-down Persian restaurant on Hollywood Boulevard: kebabs, falafel, and cigarette smoke. “When I’m not on the set, my life is the gym, a light meal, long walks with my dog Brando, and home. I’ve been spending lots of time alone lately. I’m preparing for my next film with Werner Herzog where I play a hermit: that’s the reason for the long hair and scraggly beard. I even built myself a shed on the mountains.
Before I go on set, I have to keep myself occupied. There are too many temptations for a young person in this city, so it’s better to focus on music, reading, and work”. He is candidly referring to his troubled youth passed in Echo Park in the primarily black and Mexican area of Los Angeles. “I grew up quickly. I’m an only child: I cooked for myself when I was nine because my father was a heroin addict and my mom worked three jobs to support us. There weren’t today’s bullies at school, but we endured military-style hazing designed to humiliate you in front of the others. I was already a man at age ten”. Everyone knows the milestones in Shia’s career (the Transformers movies, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps). At 26, he’s already Hollywood’s next superstar. “I grew up admiring sensitive, honest actors like John Wayne and Montgomery Clift in Red River, which is my favorite film along with Pulp Fiction. • Read full story…

Shia On Rubbing Elbows With Wall Street Execs: “I thought my life was pretty wild. I’m Richie Rich. I land in New York, secretly thinking I’m like the coolest guy in the world. I’ve been on the cover of GQ! But then I met these guys, and it’s humbling. It’s the most sex-drugs-and-rock-’n’-roll atmosphere that exists on the planet. I was hanging out with some wild human beings….It’s easy to villainize these guys with the big paychecks,” Shia says. “…They’re not all bad. I’m a pretty left-wing character, and I come from whatever collar is lower than blue. But meeting these guys really opened my mind a lot. I’ve never seen people with more drive and determination in my life.””
Shia On His Relationship With Co-Star Girlfriend Carey Mulligan: “I never really had anything in my life that was off-limits, but with this, just out of respect, I just don’t want to fuck around. She’s an unbelievably thought-provoking actress, the most talented actress I’ve ever met in my life, by leaps and bounds. Neither one of us are fame whores. It works out. It’s not like we’re the premiere couple; we’re not the red-carpet king and queen.” • Read full story…

Like New York’s financial landscape, Gordon Gekko has changed dramatically in the 20 years since his pro-greed diatribe resonated across the trading floors. Annie Leibovitz photographs the stars of Oliver Stone’s sequel, Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps, while the author finds Michael Douglas playing coy about his character’s true game. Plus: Behind-the-scenes footage of Leibovitz’s photo shoot.
Can it be? Can it really be more than 20 years since Gordon Gekko ruled Wall Street, since greed was good, since Oliver Stone and his camera first ventured deep into the canyons of Lower Manhattan? Today, with the markets still recovering from their recent free fall and financial titans doing pratfalls on the national stage, the news that Stone has returned to film a sequel can summon up only one reaction: Gordon Gekko is back. Of course.
But wait. For Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps, due in theaters later this year, we are asked to believe that, in a return to one of his greatest roles, the silver-maned Michael Douglas will play Gekko, fresh from a 20-year prison sentence, as—no, it can’t be!—a good guy? “When Gekko comes out of prison, in the beginning of this movie, he essentially has to redefine himself,” says Stone. “He’s looking for that second chance.”
Shia LaBeouf covers the latest issue of Parade magazine, where writer Dotson Rader describes the 23-year-old Transformers actor as “foul-mouthed, resentful, funny, prickly, quick-witted, and charming — a package of contradictions.” Interview highlights below:
On where he gets his humor from: “[From] seeing my parents have sex, smoke weed, my mom being naked … [and] twisted R-rated humor.”
On the breakup from his longtime girlfriend China Brezner of three years: “The good actors are all screwed up. They’re all in pain. It’s a profession of bottom-feeders and heartbroken people. Maybe it was career pressure. … Maybe I chose work. Every man has those feelings of escape and survival. I know you shouldn’t be that way. I’m trying to understand it and find the answers. I don’t have them now. Why did the love of my life and I break up? … Man, I have no idea. What was that all about? I have no answers to anything. None. Why am I an alcoholic? I haven’t a damn clue! What is life about? I don’t know.” • Read full story…
