We meet in a run-down Persian restaurant on Hollywood Boulevard: kebabs, falafel, and cigarette smoke. “When I’m not on the set, my life is the gym, a light meal, long walks with my dog Brando, and home. I’ve been spending lots of time alone lately. I’m preparing for my next film with Werner Herzog where I play a hermit: that’s the reason for the long hair and scraggly beard. I even built myself a shed on the mountains.
Before I go on set, I have to keep myself occupied. There are too many temptations for a young person in this city, so it’s better to focus on music, reading, and work”. He is candidly referring to his troubled youth passed in Echo Park in the primarily black and Mexican area of Los Angeles. “I grew up quickly. I’m an only child: I cooked for myself when I was nine because my father was a heroin addict and my mom worked three jobs to support us. There weren’t today’s bullies at school, but we endured military-style hazing designed to humiliate you in front of the others. I was already a man at age ten”. Everyone knows the milestones in Shia’s career (the Transformers movies, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps). At 26, he’s already Hollywood’s next superstar. “I grew up admiring sensitive, honest actors like John Wayne and Montgomery Clift in Red River, which is my favorite film along with Pulp Fiction. • Read full story…
Seizing on the blockbuster cliche of the week, there is definitely more than meets the eye when it comes to “Transformers” star Shia LaBeouf. The 25-year-old actor sat down with Ann Curry on TODAY Tuesday morning and he also opened up to Details magazine for its August issue.
“I would like to be George Clooney — diplomatic,” the famouslyhot-headed LaBeouf tells Details in wishing he could handle situations with more finesse. “I just don’t have the wherewithal yet or the inner serenity. My bulls–t meter is tuned very sensitive. The minute it starts kicking up, I get back to truth, and sometimes that involves, you know, ‘I don’t want to take a picture.’ And if that’s the case, am I an a–hole for being honest? Or am I an a–hole for being dishonest, smiling in your picture and I f–king hate being there? Which one is worse? These are the questions I ask myself that George Clooney doesn’t ask.”
LaBeouf also addresses the subject of former “Transformers” co-star Megan Fox, both in Details and on TODAY.
Asked if he hooked up with Fox, LaBeouf nods affirmatively in his Details interview. “Look, you’re on the set for six months, with someone who’s rooting to be attracted to you, and you’re rooting to be attracted to them,” he explains. “I never understood the separation of work and life in that situation. But the time I spent with Megan was our own thing, and I think you can see the chemistry onscreen.” As for Fox’s status at the time with her longtime boyfriend, Brian Austin Green, LaBeouf replies, “I don’t know, man. I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know …” – repeating the phrase exactly 12 times in various intonations, as if trying to get it just right. Finally, he says, “It was what it was.”

Shia On Rubbing Elbows With Wall Street Execs: “I thought my life was pretty wild. I’m Richie Rich. I land in New York, secretly thinking I’m like the coolest guy in the world. I’ve been on the cover of GQ! But then I met these guys, and it’s humbling. It’s the most sex-drugs-and-rock-’n’-roll atmosphere that exists on the planet. I was hanging out with some wild human beings….It’s easy to villainize these guys with the big paychecks,” Shia says. “…They’re not all bad. I’m a pretty left-wing character, and I come from whatever collar is lower than blue. But meeting these guys really opened my mind a lot. I’ve never seen people with more drive and determination in my life.””
Shia On His Relationship With Co-Star Girlfriend Carey Mulligan: “I never really had anything in my life that was off-limits, but with this, just out of respect, I just don’t want to fuck around. She’s an unbelievably thought-provoking actress, the most talented actress I’ve ever met in my life, by leaps and bounds. Neither one of us are fame whores. It works out. It’s not like we’re the premiere couple; we’re not the red-carpet king and queen.” • Read full story…

Peter Rubin sat down with Shia LaBeouf in May of 2008 to discuss the young star’s rise to fame for the September 2008 issue of Details. Below is an excerpt from Shia’s cover story for Details:
The script rarely gets away from LaBeouf. It got away from him in Chicago last November, when a late-night nicotine jones ended in that trespassing charge. (“It was two hotheads,” he says, “one completely in the wrong, one who wasn’t enjoying his job that night, going at it about minuscule bullshit.”) And the glee with which the mainstream news media, itching for a YOUNG ACTOR FLAMES OUT headline, seized on it led to the end of one of his and his father’s longtime bonding rituals. “We would drink together and smoke together,” LaBeouf says, “and it’s just a bad deal. It’s not something that is conducive to being a role model—no iconic actors that I know of have problems like that. And I don’t know how to do it like a gentleman. I don’t know how to have one drink.”
Check back here tomorrow for our entire September 2008 cover story with the star of Eagle Eye, Shia LaBeouf.
